So, you’ve seen the new Mazda MX-5 ‘Retractable Fastback’, and – broadly speaking – it’s ace. You like the new Mazda MX-5 RF. But how much would you like to see a hardcore version?
We would, and it appears Mazda is considering it. Speaking to TG at the New York Motor Show, a Mazda spoke person noted that though the car on display is but a nearly-finished production prototype, a potential MPS could appear in the future.
“The line up is the 1.5-litre engine and 2.0-litre engine for now,” he said. “There’s no immediate plan for an MPS version, but perhaps later on there will be.”
That’s good enough for us. It’ll certainly suit the new design, too. Though Mazda wouldn’t be pushed on a specific weight increase over the soft-top, we’re told this new Fastback is in the region of around 50kg heavier than the soft-top, thanks to the extra gubbins necessary to move the roof – Porsche 911 Targa style – into the boot.
“It’s a bit of a different target group,” he said of the new MX-5 RF. “The soft top is the purer driver’s car, but this is a bit more luxurious and, as you can see, it’s a completely different car.”
The suspension and steering remain exactly the same as the soft-top, and you’ll likely see the full production version in the first quarter of 2017. The design at least, is in the final stage, so it’ll look like this. Good.
Mazda also reckons on a 50:50 sales split between this and the soft-top MX-5. “Of course, that’s what we expect, but it could change.” We’re promised there won’t be a significant price hike over the regular car, to make it that much more tempting. And, expect the same trim levels as seen on the soft-top – Sport Nav and the new Sport Recaro.
