Mazda has scooped up two distinguished trophies with the MX-5, right after the fourth-generation roadster was named the 2015 Japan Car of the Year. It beat the Audi A4 (B9) and Mercedes-Benz GLC for the overall World Car of the Year title.
Known as the Oscars for the motoring industry, the awards were presented during a press conference at the New York Motor Show. The World Car Awards jurors were impressed with the MX-5’s back to basic stance, exceptional design and fun to drive attributes.
The Hiroshima-based car manufacturer has consistently been a strong performer in the World Car of the Year awards. The last generation Mazda2 took the crown jewel home in 2008, though the Mazda3 and Mazda6 finished within the top three in 2014 and 2013 respectively. These achievements are a testament to Mazda (still a relatively small and independent carmaker) for crafting one of the finest cars from the Far East.
On the other hand, the Audi R8 Coupe wins 2016 World Performance Car award, while the Luxury Car award goes to the BMW 7 Series. The current world’s biggest car brand in the world, Toyota, bagged the 2016 World Green Car with the Toyota Mirai.
We have reviewed the MX-5 in both written form and video forms, so be sure to check out and judge for yourself what makes the MX-5 the 2016 World Car of the Year.
