Report – All new BMW X5 could appear as early as 2017

Posted on: 2016-04-14

While the current, third generation BMW X5 sport utility vehicle is just three years old, a recent report claims the company will move quickly to replace it with an all new model as early as 2017.

During a recent interview, BMW Group Australia managing director Marc Werner officially tipped an all new X5 is already in development and also announced the upcoming model will ride on the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform that is currently used for the new 7 Series. The executive was pretty mum on delivering other details but hinted the X5 may need to shorten its lifecycle due to strategic planning – the next generation is being used as the basis of the flagship crossover X7.

BMW has acted mysterious when discussing the upcoming X7 but the most recent rumor has the large crossover stand in at around 1.6 feet longer than the current X5 and weighing a massive 4,188 pounds in its top configuration, which is actually pretty average for a full-size crossover that is said to be able to seat up to seven adults inside comfortably. Powertrain options haven’t been tipped either but the X7 is expected to get a mix of present and future engine options: a 3.0-liter inline six, a new V8, and maybe a 6.0-liter V12 if the ultra-luxury version becomes a reality. Green drivers will have the option of a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of more than 31 miles.
